FIRST RADIOSHACK FOUNDED IN 1921
RadioShack's story began in Boston, in 1921. It was there the world's first RadioShack store was founded, specializing in parts and equipment for Ham radio operators and electronics experimenters. By 1963, RadioShack had expanded to 9 retail stores and a mail-order catalogue operation. In the same year, Tandy Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas, acquired operating control of RadioShack.
TANDY LEATHER CRAFTS CREATED AN ELECTRONIC GIANT
Tandy, founded by father David and son Charles Tandy, was in the leather crafts business. In 1961, it purchased Clarke & Clarke Leather Company Ltd., a family-owned operation in Barrie, Ontario. Lorimer Clarke, owner of the company, stayed on as Vice President. It would be 7 years after this acquisition, that Tandy would ask Clarke to be the first Managing Director of their new operation: RadioShack Canada.
FIRST CANADIAN RADIOSHACK OPENS IN 1970
On April 20, 1970, the first RadioShack store in Canada began operating in Rexdale, Ontario. The Home Office/ Warehouse was built on Bayview Drive in Barrie, Ontario. Over the years, the Home Office/Warehouse grew into a 300,000 square foot complex.
TANDY GOES INTERNATIONAL IN 1986
In 1986, Tandy Corporation, having become an international electronics retailer, decided to create a new corporation to manage its offshore and Canadian operations. On June 20, 1986 Tandy spun-off retail operations in Canada, Australia, Great Britain and Europe under a new company, InterTAN Inc. Also, RadioShack, a Division of Tandy Electronics Ltd., became RadioShack, a Division of InterTAN Canada Ltd.
