PQ offers puck bucks

After trying to shore up the votes of Quebec families by offering bucks for babies and the four-day week, the Parti Quebecois (PQ) yesterday announced hockey moms and dads will get a special break: a tax deduction for sporting goods.

If re-elected, the government plans to introduce a $29 million refundable tax credit system for cultural, sports and artistic activities for families with children younger than 16, starting Jan. 1, 2005.

The credit can go toward everything from registration fees to equipment. About 500,000 families could benefit from a $100 tax credit on a ceiling of $500 in expenses.

If there are four children in activities the credit will total $400.

Landry also announced a further $27 million in spending, this time to add half an hour to high school physical education classes. Classes will go from an hour and a half a week to two hours a week. The province would hire 450 more teachers to make it happen, he said.
