Credit counseling is available in most provinces, either through a government office or a non-profit
agency.
If you are contacted by a collection agent, be aware that all provinces set out rules that collection agencies must follow. For advice on how to respond to a collection agent, refer to the first part of this handbook on general information. Consumers who wish to complain about a collection agency may contact their provincial or territorial office of consumer affairs.

For those who declare bankruptcy, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy works to ensure that the bankruptcy process is conducted in a fair and orderly manner. Under certain circumstances the Office will assist debtors in finding a trustee in bankruptcy. It also investigates complaints from debtors regarding a possible wrong.
